Warrior Dash

photo

The Warrior Dash 2012 was held in Warrior Alabama this last Saturday. It is an event put on to raise money for St. Jude’s, and is simply a grand event. The event is held in many cities throughout the Country and Australia on various throughout the year. Some friends of mine invited me out to witness the spectacle and, of course, take pictures.

After seeing what a good time was had by all, I feel compelled to participate next year myself. Especially after seeing that they have raised almost $4,000,000 to date.

Pics after the break.

Dixie Thunder Run

laborday_bk-t

The Dixie Thunder Run is just around the corner, and if you haven’t considered this event as a way to spend your Labor Day Weekend, it’s worth a look. I have previously been on this ride, and have made sure to sign up again this year, and am bringing along some friends.

With the motto of “Soldiers Helping Soldiers”, this rally started with very humble beginnings. The first ride was in 2006 and was to benefit deployed soldiers families of Mississippi. Since then it has grown in size and is now one of the largest rallies in the south, with starting points in Tupelo, Jackson, Biloxi, and Tuscaloosa. They also added a Memorial Day ride this year.

Last year I rode out to Jackson, Mississippi, and joined that group as they made their was back to Chunky River Harley-Davidson in Meridian, Mississi...

The Natchez Trace

From the NPS.gov web site:

The Natchez Trace Parkway is a 444-mile drive through exceptional scenery and 10,000 years of North American history.  Used by American Indians, “Kaintucks”, settlers, and future presidents, the Old Trace played an important role in American history. Today, visitors can enjoy not only a scenic drive but also hiking, biking, horseback riding, and camping.

I had the pleasure of taking my bike on the Natchez Trace, getting on at Cherokee, AL, and riding to Clinton, MS, then back again. It is a unique ride as it is one of the few this long that is entirely on federally managed land. The terrain ranges from the hills and curves of the Smokies to the flatlands of the Mississippi Delta...

WiFi in Huntsville Area (updated)

wifi
  • WiFi has become a staple of life for most of us in the Rocket City, and an absolute necessity for many of us. For example, we could not do what we do here at HSVexplorer without generous use of free WiFi available at many locations, or our portable hotspots. We have found that some places are much better at this than others. In fact, many although offering free WiFi are so frustrating or slow as to not be worth trying.

This article will be an ongoing work where we list ease of use, ping times, download and upload speeds, and general comments for the places we visit and use WiFi. We are using Speedtest.net for all ratings, and working with the Arab server for all tests.

Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow Mountain trail is located in Madison Alabama just east of Hughes Road. There are actually a number of trails on Rainbow Mountain. There is the Rainbow Mountain Trail, Jamooko Trail, Spring Trail and the Wild Trail. The trails are easy to follow due to the well placed trail markers.  You are not permitted to camp on the property, have open fires, rappel or dig which is reasonable because if everyone did this the area would soon be ruined. Also, the trail is closed at night. Bicycles and hiking are permitted activities, though riding a mountain bike on much of the trail would be very challenging I’d think.

There is no charge for the use of the trail. The trail is part of the Madison Greenway & Trails Inc. For more information they have a website www.madisongreenways.org...

Tinsel Trail

img_1534_tonemapped

The Tinsel Trail is at Big Spring Park. I visited Saturday evening, and although many of the trees are nice, I have to say I was fairly disappointed.

When I heard “Tinsel Trail” and that it had 160 decorated Christmas trees in Big Spring Park, I was expecting A nice evening walking around the park, looking at the various trees in different locations. What the “trail actually consists of is four tightly packed rows of 40 trees each with a walk way down the middle. In all the trail was about ninety feet.

What I did find nice was the band playing Christmas music at one end. They were quite enjoyable.

Plant City Police ditch Harleys in favor of Victory Motorcycles

pcvictory26-cycles-19825877jpg

from Tampa Bay Online:

PLANT CITY —

The city’s motorcycle officers have new sets of wheels.

The city police department recently rolled out four Victory motorcycles, which officers say are more powerful and safer than the Harley-Davidsons they replace.

“The safety features provided on the Victory motor is second to none,” Senior Officer Russell Bass said. “It turns well, has forged steel roll protectors, pinned down floorboards and a bottom skid plate that protects the bike from impact and debris.”

The Victory Commander I’s also feature a black and white art deco look.

The city revived its motorcycle unit about 10 years ago after a hiatus of several years...

Learning a Little

CharlesEvers-150x150

This will sound completely silly in this day and age, but I just visited the gas station, and remembered something from my past.

The gas station I visited is usually run by African American females, who are always friendly. Tonight was no different.

I walked in to get my purchase, was greeted with a friendly hello, and was handled from start to finish with cheer and a smile. All and all nothing different than any other time I visit the establishment. In fact, this clerk was one I had never dealt with before, and if anything she was more happy and enjoyable than the others. Which, is a hard thing to do.

At any rate, for some stupid reason, I was made to remember a day back when I was 16 or so, and trying to make a buck.

I was one of those kids selling any number of things, door to door, or ...
